Reaction to the FA Vase 3rd Rnd draw

By Craig Lamont

Monday 5 November

The news broke this lunchtime that we will face our old rivals Eastwood in the third round of the FA Vase at the New Manor Ground.

We spoke to the Gaffer and the Captain to get their thoughts on this tie.

Chris Shaw:

“I’m over the moon with this draw, to be fair, I thought this was going to happen before the draw was made, this was the one I wanted.”

“We haven’t had a home game in the Vase yet, so to finally get one and against our local rivals is great. Back in the day Ilkeston v Eastwood games were bigger than any other derby I’ve played in before, so getting them in the Vase in the third round and knowing it’s going to be the biggest game of the season so far for both teams and to play in front of a crowd of a thousand plus, you can’t get better than that.

“This has always been a big Derby and obviously both clubs are not where they used to be, we’re both going in the right direction so hopefully we can bring back what an Ilkeston v Eastwood derby was about.”

How important is it to finally get a home tie in the competition?

“Anybody who comes to the New Manor Ground is up for wanting to beat us and with us being local rivals, that desire will be higher. But we’re ready, we want to go all the way and we’re taking no prisoners.

“We haven’t conceded yet in this competition, we’re the only team left in the Vase with that record. But when you’re on the pitch, you don’t think about that, you just go out there, determined not to concede.”

Now that the draw has been made and the reaction on social media has been huge today, how much do the players think about this game in the coming weeks?

“It’s on the backburner now, we’ll concentrate on each game as it comes. The league is my main priority, I want to get promoted and to go as far as we can in the FA Vase.

“This might be my last season as a player, so to end on a high with back to back promotions and the chance to play in the FA Vase Final at Wembley, you can’t write that.”

Martin McIntosh:

What does it mean to play our local rivals in this competition?

“I think this is the best draw for everyone, I’m sure Eastwood will be as delighted as we are. For local interest this is excellent, hopefully we can get a lot of new fans to this game and that they will stay with us.

“I’m sure this will be a fantastic day for everyone, both clubs have had their problems over the years, so this tie is brilliant for both clubs and towns.”

We’re regularly drawing crowds of over 600 at the New Manor Ground, how much bigger can this game be, in terms of attendance?

“People are saying a crowd of a thousand is possible, I think it could go a lot higher, fifteen hundred quite easily, maybe even two thousand, I really think this game is that big.

“I think the local interest and history between these two teams is big, you’ve seen our chairman talking about how he watched this fixture and it got him hooked on football 48 years ago.”

“We’re playing our local rivals in the FA Vase, it couldn’t be any better really.”
