Rickford Leaves the NMG

Ilkeston Town have announced that Shaun Rickford has left the club and moved to fellow Midland Premier Division side Long Eaton United.

Rickford has featured 12 times for the Robins this season, as both a defender and striker. His only goal in an Ilkeston shirt came against Stourport Swifts earlier in the season.

And Ilkeston boss Lee Fowler spoke highly of Rickford and wished him luck in the next chapter of his career.

“I didn’t want him to leave, especially when we have just six matches left,” Said the manager. “He is a great lad and a good character to have in and around you.

“He has worked hard to lose the weight needed to be able to compete for a place and that is a credit to him. He earnt his spot in the side when I first came into the club. The form of others, new signings and an injury has since limited his game time.

“He turned down offers from several clubs in lower divisions to stay. But when Long Eaton came in for him, he felt it was the right move. He wants to go and play matches, which I can’t offer him at the minute.

“Hopefully it won’t be the last time we work together. But for now, I wish him all the best”

Rickford himself went on to thank everyone at the club and called for the fans to get behind the team between now and the end of the season.

“My time at Ilkeston has been an eye opener,” Said the striker. “The quality in the squad is the best I have seen at this level for a while.

“I’d like to personally thank both Ian Deakin and Steve Chettle for bringing me into the squad and giving us all the belief that we can win this league.

“I’d like to also say thanks to Lee Fowler as he put some faith in me at the start but he needs his squad to be fit and ready at this crucial stage of the season but after a few injuries I have been told I am not quite ready.

“Ilkeston is a special club that will go high for sure. The fans are great and now they just need to keep on getting behind the lads and get them over the line for that double that they are chasing.”
